Es liegt östlich von Lemmer und südlich von Echten. Im Jahr 2021 hatte das Dorf 655 Einwohner. Zum Dorf gehört größtenteils die Siedlung Schoterzijl. Bis zum 1. Januar 2014 gehörte Bantega zur Gemeinde Lemsterland. Bantega war das jüngste Dorf der Gemeinde Lemsterland. Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg wurde die Siedlung Echtenpolder in das Dorf Bantega umbenannt. Der Name leitet sich von Bant ab, einem Ort, der 1413 von der Zuiderzee weggespült wurde; möglicherweise standen danach noch einige Häuser, bis diese ebenfalls verschwanden, im 15. oder 16. Jahrhundert.
