Se encuentra al este de Lemmer y al sur de Echten. En 2021, el pueblo contaba con 655 habitantes. El pueblo incluye mayormente la aldea de Schoterzijl. Hasta el 1 de enero de 2014, Bantega pertenecía al municipio de Lemsterland. Bantega era el pueblo más joven del municipio de Lemsterland. Después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, la aldea de Echtenpolder fue renombrada como el pueblo de Bantega. El nombre proviene de Bant, un lugar que fue arrastrado por el Zuiderzee en 1413; posiblemente, algunas casas aún permanecieron hasta que también desaparecieron, en el siglo XV o XVI.
