Jelsum liegt südlich von Cornjum und nördlich der Stadt Leeuwarden. Der Dorfkern befindet sich an der Ostseite der N357. Auf der Westseite liegen einige Unternehmen. Dieser Teil wird Nieuwland oder Nijlân auf Friesisch genannt. In der Vergangenheit war dieser Teil das Middelzee und die N357 der Deich, der das Wasser zurückhalten musste.
