Das Dorf liegt zwischen Noordlaren und Zuidlaren, und dort ist auch der Ortsname abgeleitet. Der Ort erschien 1298 im Niederländischen als Middelare, aber 1323 trat er bereits in der heutigen Schreibweise auf. Am Rand des Dorfes liegen 2 Hünenbetten nur wenige Meter voneinander und von einigen alten Bauernhäusern entfernt.
