Es liegt südlich von Joure, am nördlichen Ufer des Tjeukemeer. An der westlichen Seite verläuft die Scharsterrijn und durch das Dorfgebiet fließt der Molensloot. Das Dorf bildet zusammen mit Ouwster-Nijega und Ouwsterhaule ein Dreidorf, das auch als Ouwster Trijega bekannt ist. Das Dorf entstand im Mittelalter. Es ist mehr als wahrscheinlich das älteste der Ouwster Trijega. Der Ortsname verweist auf die Tatsache, dass es sich um den alten Ort am Ufer handelt. Das Dorf wurde im 13. Jahrhundert als Antiqua huer erwähnt, 1440 als Oldenoever, 1482 als Olde Huw, 1490 als oppa ower und 1861 als Oudeouwer.
