Roswinkel ist ein Niederungsdorf, das im Mittelalter auf einer Sanddüne von Westerwolde entstanden ist, umgeben vom Bourtangermoos. Damit unterscheidet es sich von den umliegenden Moorkolonien. Es ist jedoch ein Streudorf, das, wie die meisten Moordörfer, hauptsächlich aus Reihenbebauung besteht. Die Umgebung besteht ausschließlich aus landwirtschaftlichem Gebiet.
