Garijp liegt im Südosten von Leeuwarden und im Südwesten von Bergum und Suameer. Zu dem Dorf gehören auch die Siedlungen Iniaheide und Siegerswoude. Im Jahr 2021 zählte das Dorf, einschließlich der Siedlungen, 1.895 Einwohner. Garijp lag wahrscheinlich ursprünglich etwas südwestlicher als dort, wo es sich jetzt befindet. Das Dorf entstand im Randbereich eines Heidegebiets, der Iniaheide. An der De Broek in der Broekpolder wurden Überreste einer Kirche gefunden, die ebenfalls darauf hinweisen, dass das Dorf an dieser Stelle gelegen hat. Das Dorf wurde 1325/36 als Garipe, 1482 als Garyp und 1579 als Garrijp erwähnt.
