Kesteren ist ein Dorf in der Gemeinde Neder-Betuwe, in der niederländischen Provinz Gelderland. Am 1. Januar 2021 hatte Kesteren 6.570 Einwohner. Damit ist Kesteren das größte Dorf der Gemeinde. Der Name Kesteren ist wahrscheinlich eine Verballhornung des römischen Wortes castra. Es wurden archäologische Beweise gefunden, dass sich auf der Westseite des Dorfes ein römisches Militärlager oder castra an einer Hochwasserterrasse am damaligen Südufer des Rheins befand. Der Rhein war die nördliche Grenze oder der limes des Römischen Reiches in dieser Region. Das castra oder castellum wurde wahrscheinlich Carvo oder Carvone genannt und wurde vor dem Jahr 40 erbaut. In der Nähe des römischen Militärlagers gab es wahrscheinlich eine Siedlung, die im dritten Jahrhundert nach Christus mehr oder weniger verlassen wurde.
