Appeltern ist vor allem bekannt wegen seines umfangreichen Modellgartenkomplexes Die Gärten von Appeltern, der jährlich viele Zehntausende von Besuchern anzieht.
Auf der Ostseite des Dorfes befindet sich die Dampfpumpe De Tuut, die besichtigt werden kann. Daneben steht eine elektrische Pumpe, die heutzutage die Neue Wetering entwässert und damit den südöstlichen Teil des Landes von Maas und Waal trocken hält.
Von der Burg von Appeltern sind nur noch Nebengebäude erhalten. Der bekannteste Bewohner war der Patriot Joan Derk van der Capellen tot den Pol, der zum Leben erweckt wird in dem Roman Schaduwbeeld oder Das Geheim von Appeltern (1989) von Hella Haasse.
