Das Gelände umfasst etwa 343 ha und liegt im Südosten des Ortes Ermelo. An der Ostseite wird die Ermelosche Heide durch die Landesstraße N302 begrenzt. Der höchste Punkt der Ermelosche Heide ist der sogenannte "Paalberg", eine kleine Moräne aus der Eiszeit.
Das Gelände wurde im Laufe der Jahrhunderte von verschiedenen Gruppen von Menschen genutzt. Man findet dort Hügelgräber aus der Zeit der Schnurkeramikkultur. In der römischen Zeit, um das Jahr 170, gab es ein Marschlager für die römische Armee, das etwa 9 ha groß war und Platz für etwa 4000-6000 Legionäre bot. Die Konturen davon sind noch deutlich in der Landschaft zu erkennen. Die Erdwälle des römischen Marschlagers haben den Status eines Nationaldenkmals und wurden 2006 teilweise restauriert.
