Das Kapteyn-Institut ist der Name der Abteilung für Astronomie der Rijksuniversität Groningen. Die Abteilung befindet sich im Kapteynborg auf dem Zernikekomplex im Norden der Stadt Groningen. Das Institut ist nach seinem Gründer, Jacobus Cornelius Kapteyn, benannt. Kapteyn wurde 1878 Professor für Astronomie und theoretische Mechanik, als es in Groningen noch kein Observatorium gab. Kapteyns erstes "Astronomisches Laboratorium" wurde 1896 in der Oude Boteringestraat eröffnet. 1913 zog das Labor in die Broerstraat auf dem Gelände des Akademiegebäudes im Stadtzentrum um. 1970 zog das Institut in ein neues Gebäude auf dem Zernikekomplex. Seit 1983 befindet sich das Institut im aktuellen Gebäude, das mit der Abteilung für Niedrigenergieforschung (Low-Energy Astrophysics) von SRON geteilt wird.
