Der See wurde Mitte der sechziger Jahre in der Forstverwaltung Hardenberg angelegt, mit einem Strand rund um die Fläche. In der Mitte der Fläche liegt eine kleine Insel. 2008/2009 wurde ein befestigter Weg als Rollbahn angelegt, der auch für Rollstuhlfahrer gedacht ist. Auch in der Forstverwaltung rund um die Fläche gibt es viele Rad- und Wanderwege. In der Umgebung des Freizeitsees gibt es zahlreiche Campingplätze, insbesondere rund um das Weiler Rheeze, wodurch er auch eine touristische Attraktion ist. Darüber hinaus wird der See bei strengen Frostbedingungen zum Schlittschuhlaufen genutzt, und in den letzten Jahren findet ein Neujahrsschwimmen statt, wenn kein Eis darauf liegt.
