Hoesche Waard ist, wie der Name schon sagt, ein Wert (oder Weerd). Das ist ein alter Name für eine flache Landschaft in einem Flussgebiet. Werte sind unter dem Einfluss von Flüssen entstanden und ganz oder teilweise von ihnen umgeben. Die Werte werden gegen diese Wasserläufe durch Deiche geschützt. Dies im Gegensatz zu Uferbereichen, die außerhalb des Deichs am Fluss liegen. Regionale Namen mit "Wert" kommen seit dem 12. Jahrhundert im niederländischen Flussgebiet vor. Große Werte sind die Alblasserwaard, die Bommelerwaard, die Krimpenerwaard, die Lopikerwaard, die Tielerwaard und die Hoeksche Waard. Die Groote oder Hollandsche Waard ist ein nicht mehr existierender Wert.
