Hoesche Waard è, come dice il nome, una waard (o weerd). Questo è un antico nome per un paesaggio pianeggiante in una zona fluviale. Le waarden sono nate sotto l'influenza dei fiumi e sono completamente o parzialmente circondate da essi. Le waarden sono protette da argini fluviali contro questi corsi d'acqua. Questo è in contrapposizione alle uiterwaarden, che si trovano all'esterno degli argini del fiume. I nomi delle regioni con "waard" compaiono nel territorio fluviale olandese fin dal XII secolo. Le grandi waarden sono l'Alblasserwaard, il Bommelerwaard, il Krimpenerwaard, il Lopikerwaard, il Tielerwaard e l'Hoeksche Waard. La Groote o Hollandsche Waard è una waard non più esistente.
