Hoesche Waard is, as the name suggests, a "waard" (or "weerd"). That is an old name for a flat landscape in a river area. "Waarden" are formed under the influence of rivers and are completely or partially surrounded by them. The "waarden" are protected from these waterways by river dikes. This is in contrast to "uiterwaarden," which lie outside the dikes along the river. Region names with "waard" have appeared in the Dutch river area since the 12th century. Large "waarden" include the Alblasserwaard, the Bommelerwaard, the Krimpenerwaard, the Lopikerwaard, the Tielerwaard, and the Hoeksche Waard. The Groote or Hollandsche Waard is a now non-existent "waard."
