Die Liste mit dem Turfschip von Breda ist eines der bekanntesten Ereignisse des Achtzigjährigen Krieges. Sie führte zur Einnahme von Breda am 4. März 1590 und war nicht nur ein militärischer, sondern vor allem auch ein moralischer Sieg für die Truppen von Maurits von Nassau, dem späteren Prinzen von Oranien.
Im Jahr 1568 hatten sich die Niederlande gegen die Schreckensherrschaft des Herzogs von Alva erhoben. Dies führte 1581 zur formalen Unabhängigkeitserklärung und 1587 zur Gründung der Republik der Sieben Vereinigten Niederlande.
