Am Hang des Tankenbergs wurde 1948 eine Kapelle erbaut aus Dankbarkeit, dass Oldenzaal die Kriegsjahre so gut wie unbeschadet überstanden hat, auch als Erinnerung an drei Oldenzaler, die während der Kriegshandlungen ums Leben gekommen sind. Das Grundstück, auf dem die Kapelle erbaut wurde, wurde von dem Textilfabrikanten Gelderman zur Verfügung gestellt. Die Kapelle wurde aus Bentheimer Sandstein errichtet und am 29. August 1948 von Dechant I.H. van de Berg eingeweiht. Auf dem Gedenkstein rechts an der Außenwand stehen die Namen von J.H. Engelbertink, der am 13. Mai 1940 auf der Grebbeberg gefallen ist, mr. Joan Gelderman, einem Widerstandskämpfer, der am 4. September 1944 im Lager Vught erschossen wurde, und G.J.H. Wolbers, einem Mitglied des Widerstands, der am 2. April 1945 von flüchtenden Deutschen erschossen wurde.
