Die Kirche von Barneveld ist berühmt wegen Jan van Schaffelaar, der der Überlieferung nach 1482 von dem Turm sprang. Das ist nicht der heutige Turm der Kirche, der aus dem Jahr 1828 stammt.
Die Geschichte spielte sich während der Hoekse- und Kabeljauwse Konflikte ab. Jan van Schaffelaar war 'Kabeljouw' und hatte sich mit Anhängern im Turm verschanzt, weil sie von Hoekse Soldaten aus Amersfoort und Nijkerk belagert wurden. Um seine Mitstreiter zu schonen, sprang Jan van Schaffelaar von dem Turm und überlebte den Fall. Er wurde von seinen Feinden an Ort und Stelle ermordet.
Die Statue auf dem Torenplein steht seit 1903 an dieser Stelle.
