Hiermit ist es der kleinste Stadtteil des Stadtbezirks Rotterdam-Noord. Der Stadtteil wird begrenzt von der Schiekade, der Bergweg, der Noordsingel, dem Heer Bokelweg.
Wo heute das Agniesebezirk liegt, lag früher der Polder Oost-Blommersdijk. In diesem Gebiet zwischen der Rotte und der Rotterdamer Schie standen im 18. Jahrhundert bereits einige Häuser, aber in der Zeit von 1850 bis 1940 wird der gesamte Polder bebaut. Der Agniesebezirk ist nach der in der Mitte gelegenen Agniesestraat benannt. Der Name Agniese stammt von Agniese, der einzigen Tochter von Dieric Bokel. Sie heiratete 1336 Simon van Benthem und anschließend Gherijt van Herlaer. Durch ihre Ehen ging der größte Teil der Besitztümer ihres Vaters an andere Geschlechter über.
