Der Kanal verläuft vom Dorf Stedum in southeastlicher Richtung zum Westerwijtwerdermaar. Das Wasser hat kaum Bedeutung für die Entwässerung. Die Hauptfunktion ist die eines Schifffahrtskanals, obwohl diese Bedeutung weit in der Vergangenheit liegt. Heutzutage wird er kaum befahren. Es wird jedoch Wasser aus dem Kanal für die Entwässerungen Krangeweer an der Nordwestseite über den Dorpstertocht und Hemert an der Südostseite über den Lutjewijtwerdertocht entnommen.
