Das Nassau-Denkmal wurde zur Erinnerung an die 500-jährige Verbindung (1904) zwischen Breda und dem Haus Oranje-Nassau errichtet. Im Jahr 1404 wurde Engelbrecht I. von Nassau-Dillenburg als Herr von Breda gefeiert.
Die Statue wurde in Form einer Burg geschaffen und mit einem Löwen gekrönt. Neben den Namen und Wappen von Engelbrecht und seiner Frau Johanna von Polanen sind auf dem Denkmal die Wappen der Gemeinden in der Baronie von Breda zu sehen.
Das Denkmal wurde am 3. Juli 1905 von Königin Wilhelmina enthüllt.
