Der Obelisk ist ein einzigartiges Steindenkmal inmitten des Parkteichs im Zentrum von Vaals. Es handelt sich um einen Obelisken aus Blaustein, den Johann Arnold von Clermont im 18. Jahrhundert aufstellen ließ, um das nördliche Ende des Besitzes der Familie von Clermont zu markieren. Der Aachener Tuchfabrikant Johann Arnold von Clermont machte Vaals mit seiner Tuchindustrie bekannt. Die Textilindustrie brachte großen wirtschaftlichen Wohlstand in die Grenzstadt, der noch heute in den Straßen sichtbar ist.
