Der ursprüngliche Steinbruch war von 1902 bis 1970 in Gebrauch. Durch die Verwendung von Ziegeln nahm die Nachfrage nach Kunrader Stein stark ab. Auch der Bau der daneben verlaufenden A79 führte zur Schließung des Steinbruchs.
Neben dem Steinbruch befand sich an diesem Standort auch ein Kalkbrennofen. Heutzutage ist die Nachfrage nach Kunrader Stein wieder groß, insbesondere aufgrund notwendiger Restaurierungsarbeiten an den mit dieser Steinart gebauten Häusern und religiösen Monumenten.
Seit einigen Jahren ist der Steinbruch wieder geöffnet und es gibt ein Atelier zur Mergelbearbeitung.
