Der Turfvaart ist ein Gewässer von etwa 24 km Länge, das durch die Naturschutzgebiete Pannenhoef und Vloeiweide entlang von Effen nach Breda fließt, wo es in die Aa oder Weerijs mündet.
Der Turfvaart wurde im 17. Jahrhundert gegraben. Der erste Abschnitt des Turfvaart wurde 1619 fertiggestellt.
Der Wasserweg war eine wichtige Verkehrsader, von der aus das Gebiet torfgestochen wurde. Der Wasserweg sorgte für die Entwässerung des Torfmoores, und der Torf wurde nach Breda transportiert. Auf dem Rückweg nahmen die Torfschiffe Dünger mit, um das abgetorfte Gebiet fruchtbar zu machen.
Der Torfabbau begann Ende des 17. Jahrhunderts bereits zu schwinden, da die besten Abbaugebiete bereits torfgestochen waren. Die letzte Torflieferung wurde 1733 nach Breda transportiert.
