Zu Beginn des 12. Jahrhunderts wurde in diesem Gebiet ein Kloster gegründet, das Norbertinerkloster Marienweerd. Im Laufe der Jahre wuchs dieses Kloster zu einem sehr reichen Stift heran. Nach der Reformation kam das Kloster 1734 in den Besitz der Familie Van Bylandt, wo es auch den Status 'Hohe Herrschaft' erhielt. Nachkommen dieser Familie besitzen und verwalten / betreiben noch immer das heutige Gut Heerlijkheid Mariënwaerdt. Der Eingang zum Anwesen wird am Anfang der Notenlaan von einem schönen Eingangstor markiert. Das Herrenhaus wurde im 18. Jahrhundert auf den Gewölben des ehemaligen Klosters errichtet, dessen Keller mit Querschiffen noch zu sehen sind.
