Die natürliche Senke entstand in der letzten Eiszeit durch schmelzendes Eis in wärmeren Perioden. An feuchten Stellen bildete sich im Laufe der Jahrhunderte Torf. Durch Abholzung und Überweidung wurde das Leersumse Feld zu einem Gebiet aus Sanddünen und Heide. Vor zwei Jahrhunderten wurde der Torf zur Gewinnung von Torf abgebaut. Dadurch entstanden die Leersumse Plassen. Im Jahr 1911 kaufte M.C. Verloop das 80 Hektar große Leersumse Feld. Aus dem ersten See ließ er ein Schwimmbad mit einer kleinen Insel anlegen und es wurden auch Kanäle zum Kanufahren gegraben.
