De Lier ist ein Ort in der Provinz Südholland. Der Ort hat 12.480 Einwohner. Bis zum 1. Januar 2004 war De Lier eine eigenständige Gemeinde, aber durch eine Gemeindereform ging sie in die Gemeinde Westland zusammen mit den Gemeinden Monster, Naaldwijk, 's-Gravenzande und Wateringen über. Der Name De Lier stammt von dem Flüsschen Lee. In Schriften wird von der Lihora gesprochen. Aber der größte Teil der einheimischen Bevölkerung sprach kein Latein, weshalb das Wasser als die Leer, Lede oder Lee bekannt war. Im Altgermanischen bedeutet dies: Weg oder Durchgang, auf Wasser oder Land. Man sprach also von dem Dorf an der Leer, später abgekürzt zu De Leer. Dies wurde oft rein als De Lier ausgesprochen, der Name, den der Ort heute noch trägt.
