Das Leersumse Veld mit den dazugehörigen Teichen liegt in einer natürlichen Senke, während der Eiszeit durch Schmelzwasser in der Moräne des Utrechtse Heuvelrug ausgeschliffen. Durch Holzernte und Beweidung wurde der Boden nährstoffarm, sodass das Gebiet hauptsächlich aus Heide und Sandverwehungen bestand. Im tiefsten Teil stand Wasser und es entstand ein Moor, aus dem im achtzehnten Jahrhundert Torf gewonnen wurde. Der Torf wurde getrocknet. Übrig blieben drei ausgebaggerte Teiche. Diese wurden 1911 von dem Hilversumer M.C. Verloop gekauft. Im ersten Teich wurde ein Schwimmbad gegraben und um die Teiche ließ er Kanäle graben, in denen die Kinder Kanu fahren konnten. Seit 1941 ist das Gebiet im Besitz von Staatsbosbeheer und es gibt Raum für Naturentwicklung. Die Leersumser Teiche bilden ein ideales Brutgebiet für Vögel. Daher ist das Gebiet in unmittelbarer Nähe des Wassers während der Brutzeit (15. März – 31. Juli) nicht zugänglich.
