Dies ist das älteste Rückhaltebecken von Enschede (1969). Wenn es sehr stark regnet, kann die Kläranlage Enschede West nicht das gesamte Wasser verarbeiten. Das Abwasser wird dann in dieses Rückhaltebecken abgeleitet. Dieses Becken fasst bis zu fünf Millionen Liter schmutziges Wasser vorübergehend, bis bei der Kläranlage ‘wieder Platz ist’. Der Schmutz setzt sich am Boden ab (daher der Name Rückhaltebecken). Nach dem Regen wird das wieder gelöst, abgeleitet zur Wasseraufbereitung und dort schließlich gereinigt. Das Becken hat eine offene Oberseite, sodass man sehen kann, wie es funktioniert. An der Wand steht ein Wassergedicht des Stadtpoeten Jos Eertink.
