Der Name stammt von dem Zeeuws-Vlaamse Wort marollen, das Blässhühner bedeutet und möglicherweise, angesichts der weißen Bles auf dem ansonsten schwarzen Federkleid, an Klosterfrauen erinnert. Marollenput ist der Ort, an dem nach der Überschwemmung von 1583 mehrere Meeresarme zusammenkamen. Aus dem Norden kam das Schwarze Loch, aus dem Osten das Nieuwerhavense Loch, während das Südwesten über das Coxysche Loch mit dem Zwin verbunden war. Diese Zusammenführung führte zu Wantij, wodurch eine Verlandung eintrat und diese Meeresarme bald nicht mehr für die Schifffahrt geeignet waren.
