Das Anwesen umfasst insgesamt 380 ha Wald- und Naturschutzgebiete. Der größte Teil der Wälder ist relativ jung und stammt aus der Heidebewirtschaftung. Der Waldboden variiert von sehr nährstoffarm und trocken (hauptsächlich an den Standorten der ehemaligen Heideflächen) bis zu reicheren Holtpodzol-Böden. Die wichtigste Baumart ist die Kiefer.
Die derzeitige Bewirtschaftungsmethode, integrierte Waldwirtschaft, zielt – neben der Produktion von wertvollem Holz – darauf ab, die Naturwerte der Wälder zu erhöhen. Dies geschieht unter anderem durch das Stehenlassen von totem Holz und durch gruppenweise Herausnahme von Bäumen, um eine vielfältige Waldstruktur zu entwickeln. Dieser Ansatz bietet besondere Chancen für die Entwicklung von Flora und Fauna.
Die Wälder von Tongern sind FSC-zertifiziert.
