Fauske wird umgeben von Bodø im Westen, Sørfold im Norden, Schweden im Osten und Saltdal im Süden. Südlich von Fauske auf einer Anhöhe östlich der Straße liegt gegenüber dem Abzweig nach Leivset ein Opferplatz der Samen, der bis ins Mittelalter genutzt wurde.
Bekannt ist die Stadt für ihre Marmorvorkommen. Es wird heute ein abwechselnd rosafarbener/weißer sowie ein hellgrauer Marmor gewonnen. Dieser Werkstein ist weltweit bekannt und nachgefragt. Verbaut ist er u.A. im UNO-Hauptquartier in New York.
