Die Universität von Puerto Rico , abgekürzt UPR, besteht seit 1903 und ist die älteste und größte Universität von Puerto Rico. Sie ist in staatlicher Trägerschaft . Ihr Sitz ist San Juan.
Im Jahr 1900 wurde die Escuela Normal Industrial in Fajardo als erste Einrichtung der höheren Bildung in Puerto Rico eingerichtet. Im folgenden Jahr wurde die Institution nach Rio Piedras verlegt. Am 12. März 1903 wurde ein Gesetz zur Gründung der Universität verabschiedet. An diesem Tag wurde die Escuela Normal als die erste Abteilung der Universität erklärt.
