Heltau liegt ca. 8 km südwestlich von Hermannstadt entfernt am Fuß der Südkarpaten. Durch die Stadt fließen zwei Bäche, der Pârâul Argintului und der Pârâul Ursului .Heltau wurde 1204 erstmals urkundlich erwähnt, von Deutschen gegründet und jahrhundertelang mehrheitlich von Siebenbürger Sachsen bewohnt. Im Jahr 1425 erhielt Heltau die erste Turmuhr Siebenbürgens. Im Jahre 1500, anlässlich eines Besuches von König Wladislaus II., erhielt die Stadt das Marktrecht.
