Er erreichte Moskau mit nur 100.000. Aber das Schlimmste sollte noch kommen. Er kam mit nur 10.000 zurück. Der Kartenmacher Charles Joseph Minard integrierte sechs separate Variablen in seine Karte. Sie umfasst die Größe der Armee, den Weg, Ortsnamen, die Daten und die Temperatur. Es ist eines der ersten Beispiele für eine Flusskarte. Minard war ein Pionier in der Verwendung von Grafiken in Ingenieurwesen und Statistik.
