Unter der Bezeichnung Alte Buchenwälder und Buchenurwälder der Karpaten und anderer Regionen Europas führt die UNESCO zahlreiche räumlich getrennte Buchenwaldgebiete in 18 europäischen Ländern als Weltnaturerbe. Die Gesamtfläche der eingetragenen Buchenwälder beträgt 92.023 Hektar, wovon rund 30 Prozent in der Ukraine liegen.
