Chakangrao (das alte Kamphaeng Phet) hatte dasselbe Stadtplanungskonzept wie Sukhothai und Si Satchanalai, mit separaten Zonen für religiöse Stätten, sowohl innerhalb als auch außerhalb der Stadtgrenzen. Chakangrao befand sich an einer strategischen Lage in der Nähe des Ping-Flusses. Die Stadt war ein Außenposten und war mit einer hohen Verteidigungsmauer und Festungen befästigt, die alle aus Laterit gebaut wurden. Die rechteckige Stadt war 300 bis 700 Meter breit und 2.200 Meter lang.
Eine Zone innerhalb der Stadtmauer, die eine Fläche von 503 Rais umfasst, beinhaltet Wat Phra Kaeo, Wat Phra That, den Alten Palast (Sa Mon), den Siva-Schrein, die Stadtmauer, den Wassergraben und die Befestigungen.
