Saraburi ist seit der Antike eine wichtige Stadt. Es wird angenommen, dass sie ungefähr im Jahr 1549 während der Herrschaft von König Maha Chakkraphat des Königreichs Ayutthaya gegründet wurde. Es wird vermutet, dass der König befohlen hatte, einige Teile von Lop Buri und Nakhon Nayok zusammenzuführen und die Provinz Saraburi zu gründen, um ein Zentrum für die Mobilisierung der Bürger in Kriegszeiten zu schaffen.
