Saraburi a été une ville importante depuis les temps anciens. On suppose qu'elle a été établie aux alentours de 1549 pendant le règne du roi Maha Chakkraphat du royaume d'Ayutthaya. On suppose que le roi avait ordonné de combiner certaines parties de Lop Buri et de Nakhon Nayok ensemble et d'établir la province de Saraburi dans le but de devenir un centre de mobilisation des citoyens en temps de guerre. Par conséquent, depuis la période d'Ayutthaya, l'histoire de Saraburi est généralement liée aux batailles et aux guerres. Quant à l'origine du mot "Saraburi", on suppose qu'en raison de sa situation près d'un marais appelé "Bueng Nong Ngong", lorsque la ville a été établie, une combinaison de "Sa" - un marais - et "Buri" - une ville - a été suggérée et la ville a été nommée Saraburi.
