Die Schlacht bei Issos im November 333 v. Chr. war das erste direkte Aufeinandertreffen der Kriegsherren Alexander des Großen auf makedonischer und Dareios III. auf persischer Seite. Die Griechen/Makedonen wollten sich – so das offizielle Kriegsziel – mit ihrem Feldzug für die Zerstörungen rächen, die die Perser fast 150 Jahre zuvor in Griechenland verursacht hatten. Alexander strebte aber zudem offenkundig nach Ruhm und Eroberungen.
Für das Ereignis hat sich folgender Merkspruch eingebürgert: „Drei-drei-drei, bei Issos Keilerei.“
