Harpers Ferry ist eine Kleinstadt im Jefferson County im US-Bundesstaat West Virginia mit 286 Einwohnern . Sie liegt an der Mündung des Shenandoah River in den Potomac im Dreiländereck der US-Bundesstaaten Maryland, Virginia und West Virginia.
Harpers Ferry ist historisch vor allem durch den Überfall John Browns am 16. Oktober 1859 bekannt, durch den dieser einen Sklavenaufstand entfachen wollte. Die Sklaven sollten mit Handwaffen bewaffnet werden, die in der im Ort befindlichen zweiten staatlichen Waffenfabrik für die US-Streitkräfte hergestellt worden waren. Der Plan scheiterte. Die Waffenfabrik bestand von 1799 bis April 1861. Um sie nicht in konföderierte Hände fallen zu lassen, zündete die militärische Sicherung die Gebäude vor ihrem Abzug an. Den Konföderierten gelang es, die eingelagerten Waffen und die Maschinen vor der Zerstörung zu retten.
