Die Thousand Islands liegen am Abfluss des Ontariosees in der Grenzregion zwischen Kanada und den USA an den Anfängen des Sankt-Lorenz-Stroms. Die Inselgruppe besteht aus 1864 Inseln, wobei Wolfe Island die mit Abstand größte ist und Insel Nr. 15 die kleinste. 21 dieser Inseln bilden den Thousand-Islands-Nationalpark, den kleinsten Nationalpark Kanadas. Seit 2002 ist die Gegend ein UNESCO-Biosphärenreservat.
Die amerikanische Salatsauce „Thousand-Island-Dressing“ verdankt ihren Namen der Region, in der sie wahrscheinlich auch erfunden wurde und hat den Namen der Thousand Islands, die außerhalb Nordamerikas sonst wenig bekannt sind, in die Welt getragen.
