Das Kernkraftwerk Vogtle liegt in der Nähe von Waynesboro, Burke County im Osten des Bundesstaates Georgia. Der Fluss bildet dort die Grenze zum östlich gelegenen South Carolina. Das Kernkraftwerk liegt etwa 40 Kilometer südlich von Augusta. Am 12. März 2013 wurde der Bau zweier weiterer Kraftwerksblöcke begonnen.
Der letzte Neubau in den USA war 1978 genehmigt worden.
Das Kernkraftwerk wurde nach Alvin W. Vogtle benannt, einem ehemaligen Vorstandsvorsitzenden der Unternehmen Alabama Power und Southern Company. Vogtle war unter anderem wegen seiner mehrfach verfilmten Kriegserlebnisse in Nazideutschland bekannt geworden und 1994 im Alter von 75 Jahren an Herzversagen verstorben.
