Die Geschichte dieser Kirche ist eng mit jener der nahe gelegenen Abtei verknüpft, die 1794 von den französischen Revolutionstruppen zerstört wurde. Sie war das Ziel von Wallfahrten zu Sankt-Ursmer, einem der ersten Gründer dieser Abtei.
Das Gebäude ist ein wertvolles Zeugnis für die karolingische oder vorromanische Kunst. Es ist in Form eines lateinischen Kreuzes ausgerichtet, wobei das Schiff den ältesten Teil der Kirche darstellt.
Beeindruckend ist die gewölbte Krypta. Sie ist auf einem rechteckigen Grundriss gebaut, der dem des Chores entspricht. Sie enthält den Sarkophag von Sankt Ursmer und zahlreiche Grabplatten früherer Äbte. Der aus dem 11. Jh. stammende Turm ist 32 Meter hoch. Seine satteldachförmige Spitze wurde im 19. Jh. realisiert.
