Der Vesuv ist ein aktiver Vulkan auf dem europäischen Festland. Er liegt am Golf von Neapel in der italienischen Region Kampanien, neun Kilometer von der Stadt Neapel entfernt.
Die Bezeichnung „Vesuv“ wird auf die indo-europäische Wurzel *aues- oder *eus- zurückgeführt. Sie würde daher „der Scheinende“ oder „der Brennende“ bedeuten.
