Die Halbinsel Coney Island ist die äußerste südliche Spitze von Brooklyn, die direkt an der Atlantikküste liegt und vor allem durch ihre großen Vergnügungsparks und die angrenzende Hochhaussiedlung russischer Einwanderer bekannt ist. Ursprünglich war Coney Island tatsächlich eine Insel, die sich rund acht Kilometer in Ost-West-Richtung erstreckte und einen knappen Kilometer breit war. Sie war von Brooklyn durch die Meerenge Coney Island Creek getrennt, die in den 1940er Jahren gut zur Hälfte zugeschüttet wurde, um an dieser Stelle die Shore-Parkway-Stadtautobahn zu errichten.
Die gleichnamige New Yorker Gemeinde bezeichnet nur den Teil dieser Insel, der zwischen dem Ocean Parkway und der 37. Straße West liegt und zum 13. Brooklyner Stadtbezirk gehört.
