In August 2023, I departed from Innsbruck on my first long solo bike trip to Istanbul, via the Balkan countries. After a heatwave in Croatia, it was wonderful to ride into the mountainous regions of Albania and North Macedonia. I found this part of the journey to be one of the most beautiful because there are hardly any tourists, it's inexpensive, and you get to know the authentic countryside: the farms with animals roaming freely and the mix of Christians and Muslims give a good picture of how people live together here.
