The Hochtannbergstrasse dates back to 1953 and is thus the youngest of the mountain passes in the area. The road is forbidden for caravans and trailers; max. gradient 15%. The Hochtannbergpass (1679 m) is closed from December to March.
On a mountain plateau covered with meadows, high above the young Lech, lies the charming summer resort and winter sports place Warth (1494 m; 250 inhabitants). To the west rises the Warther Horn (2257 m) and behind it the Karhorn (2416 m); the latter is located precisely on the divide between Bregenzer Ache and Lech and is a beautiful goal for a climb due to its views. Warth is located at a junction of important roads that connect regions and countries. Westward, the Hochtannbergstrasse leads to Bregenzerwald, eastward the road goes through the Lechtal into Tyrol, and southward the Flexenstrasse heads towards the Arlberg.
