The municipality of Assling is located in the East Tyrolean part of the Puster Valley, which is traversed by the Drava River. It is situated about 10 kilometers west of Lienz.
The municipal area extends on both sides of the Puster Valley, but only the northern part along the Puster Valley High Road and the narrow section of the Drava River is inhabited.
