Parish Church of St. John on Wimberg

The parish church of St. Johann am Wimberg is located in the center of the municipality of St. Johann am Wimberg in the district of Rohrbach in Upper Austria. The Roman Catholic parish church, dedicated to St. John the Baptist, belongs to the deanery of St. Johann am Wimberg in the diocese of Linz and is protected as a historic monument.
The first historically verified mention of St. Johann am Wimberg is an entry from the year 1147 in the so-called church consecration chronicle of the Abbey of St. Florian. On January 1 of that year, the church was consecrated by Bishop Reginbert of Passau. The church was under the dependency of the mother parish of Niederwaldkirchen and the Abbey of St. Florian. As part of the Counter-Reformation, St. Johann was elevated to an independent parish in the early 17th century. The original church or a later renovation was expanded in the Gothic style around 1510. In 1710, the church was Baroque remodeled under Pastor Augustin Adam Prechenmacher. The last extensive general renovation was completed in early autumn 1996.
